If you loved Nearmap NAVIG8, we’re taking Nearmap on the road, and our next stop is SXSW Sydney at the ICC, Darling Harbour, 16—21 October, 2023.

This vibrant world-renowned event is heading outside of Austin, Texas for the first in its 36-year history — bringing together an inspiring collection of innovative creators, thought-leaders and artists from across the world to ignite creative discovery.
Nearmap AI experts Dr. Michael Bewley, Vice President, AI & Computer Vision, and Dr. Kitty Lo, Principal Data Scientist will be sharing the Discovery Stage at the International Convention Centre on Thursday 19 October, 3pm, to share their insights about how Nearmap harnesses the power of deep learning models, machine learning and AI to help us map a better future.
Mike and Kitty are looking forward to sharing their knowledge and passion for the positive impacts of AI and ML, and how it can enhance geospatial intelligence and aerial imagery to provide faster, more practical insights than ever before.
“When I joined Nearmap with fresh eyes, it was immediately clear that something profound was possible,” said Mike Bewley. “It was something people were talking about at the edges, but no one was actually achieving for real. Years of prototyping and building foundations has led to Nearmap sharing a new way to view and analyse the world we live in.”
“To be asked to present at an event as cutting-edge as SXSW is incredible! Nearmap has been pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in tech for decades, so to be among other innovative thought-leaders is so exciting,” said Dr. Kitty Lo, who will share how Nearmap AI is providing faster and more accurate insights into disaster impact.
“The robots are coming – and they have far more capacity to help humanity than to damage it, if we focus our energy in the right places,” said Mike.
The Nearmap deep learning model, which is providing insights in four countries (Australia, New Zealand, United States and Canada), produces 80 different output layers — from buildings, to construction sites, cranes, lawns, pools, solar, cars, trees, power poles, trees overhanging buildings, buildings under construction, discarded tyres, and numerous kinds of roof condition, post catastrophe damage, and more.
What do you even do with all that data? Mike and Kitty will share some of the real-world applications.
When asked to compare how Nearmap stacks-up in the geospatial intelligence space, Mike says: ”Everyone wants to talk about the metaverse, or digital twins, or IoT devices… well at Nearmap we already have pipelines taking around 700,000 images a day, with a powerful AI model drawing potentially hundreds of different types of objects on each one. This is transformational tech in a way that very few things are… and we’re still just nipping at the edges of what can be done with it.”
Dr. Kitty Lo’s career path has included identifying optimal cancer treatments for a non-profit, and modelling Covid for government agencies during the global pandemic. “When we apply the power of technology like machine learning and AI in positive ways, the outcomes to our communities and businesses are ground-breaking. I’m looking forward to seeing the audience response to some of the info and stats we’ll be sharing on stage,” said Kitty.
What kind of world do we want to live in, and are we making progress towards getting there?
See you at SXSW Sydney to find out!
