made flight plans capturing the nearmap brand Best-made flight plans: capturing the Nearmap brand Sep 2024 Sep 2024 ‘Blue sky’ means a lot to us here at Nearmap, in terms of capturing the clearest imagery, and the creative thinking behind our constantly evolving technology and range . Play So when three Nearmappers put their heads together to blue-sky an idea at a work function in May 2024, it took off: “ Let’s share our new (sky-blue) Nearmap logo in MapBrowser, by capturing it on the ground from one of our own survey flights!” It sounds easy in principle. But for a start, our Geospatial Content Operations team needed to map out a flight plan. M’Shenda Turner is Senior Director of the always-on team of survey and flight-planners – constantly in-the-know about all things sky and weather, air traffic control (ATC), and which areas our customers are most interested in seeing captured and updated next. In this instance, the area of focus was Canberra, ACT, specifically a 45m x 13m patch of earth at the National Arboretum Canberra, the chosen location to unroll a giant reusable Nearmap banner. And the ‘customer’ in question was the Nearmap Marketing and Events team, with Claudine Pache, Marketing Director ANZ, and Eliza Wager, Senior Event Marketing Manager, also keeping a keen eye on the skies. Another crucial factor was the weather to be clear – blue sky. Following an extended period of cloud cover across the ACT and Canberra, on Monday 29th July 2024, the Geospatial Content Operations team announced it was ‘all systems go!’ for the banner flight. However, because the Arboretum is a popular tourism destination, the banner could only be placed on the ground for a matter of hours before being rolled up and removed. Coordinating this timing on the ground and in the air with expert precision led to the aerial Nearmap brand reveal that we covered in part two of this blog series. Watch the clip to see behind-the-scenes footage of the logistics on the day. “As hoped and expected, there were no issues with the flight data or camera system operation and we could share the good news that the capture was a success, to the sound of much relief and accolades from the Nearmap teams on the ground.” M’Shenda Turner, Senior Director, Geospatial Content Operations Nearmap: look closer, know more.
